What are the symptoms of heartburn?

The primary symptom of heartburn is a painful, burning sensation in the chest. It occurs when stomach acid backs up into your esophagus, usually because the opening between your stomach and esophagus isn’t working properly.

ROLAIDS® relieves heartburn by neutralizing stomach acid. This provides relief from the discomfort these symptoms cause, ensuring your heartburn doesn’t get in the way of a good meal.

Heartburn vs. acid reflux vs. GERD

ROLAIDS® relieves heartburn by neutralizing stomach acid.

People sometimes confuse heartburn with acid reflux and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) because the symptoms are similar; however, the last two are more serious conditions. Heartburn is an occasional condition with mild to moderate symptoms while acid reflux and GERD typically occur at least twice a week, with more severe symptoms.

If you have heartburn symptoms that persist even after taking ROLAIDS, make an appointment to see your healthcare professional.

Heartburn symptoms can also be similar to symptoms for more serious conditions unrelated to digestion. Be sure to consult your healthcare provider if you experience:
  • Heartburn that returns as soon as your antacid wears off
  • Heartburn that often wakes you up at night
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Spitting up blood
  • Black stools
  • Weight loss
